Theme: “The Changing Face of Optometric Education: Current Priorities for Students and Educators”

Message from Organizing chair

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 24th Dr. E. Vaithilingam Memorial Scientific Session, themed “The Changing Face of Optometric Education: Current Priorities for Students and Educators.”

Dr. E. Vaithilingam was a visionary whose commitment to excellence in optometric education and professional development continues to inspire generations. This memorial scientific session stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy and his belief in lifelong learning, innovation, and service.

Optometric education is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by rapid advances in technology, evolving healthcare needs, interdisciplinary collaboration, and changing expectations from students and society. In the Indian context, the introduction of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP)–mandated curriculum represents a landmark shift, emphasising competency-based education, standardisation, and enhanced professional accountability. This year’s theme is both timely and relevant, encouraging critical reflection on how curricula, teaching methodologies, assessment strategies, and faculty roles must evolve to align with these emerging priorities.

The scientific programme has been thoughtfully designed to bring together educators, clinicians, researchers, and students on a common platform to share insights, experiences, and best practices. I am confident that the deliberations, discussions, and interactions during this session will be intellectually stimulating and professionally enriching for all participants.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the speakers, faculty, organising committee members, sponsors, and participants for their valuable contributions and unwavering support. I look forward to your active participation and to a meaningful exchange of ideas that will help shape the future of optometric education.

As we honour the legacy of Dr. E. Vaithilingam, let us also commit ourselves to shaping an optometric education system that is relevant, resilient, and ready for the future—where today’s conversations translate into tomorrow’s transformation.

Best wishes and regards
